H.265 Video Codec Gets The ITU Seal of Approval

Twice the pixels, or half the bandwidth. Sounds like a good deal to us.
H.265 has been on our radar since early 2012, but as of today it has passed an important milestone. The ITU has given the new codec its official approval, paving the way for devices and software to start implementing the standard as they see fit. H.265 (also known as High Efficiency Video Coding) will cut the bandwidth requirements for streaming video in half, or for the Tecnobits crowd, double the amount data you can fit in the same sized container.
H.265 has been a long time in the making, but its debut couldn’t be more aptly timed. Mobile devices have been adopting 4G connections at an impressive clip, but countless new Android phones are also being shipped with 1080p displays. H.265 will allow these devices to stream HD content over saturated cellular networks, or delivery comparably sized video streams to the next generation of 4K Ultra HD TV’s.
